Xenia Mailer/Edit - Version 1.98 (Eval) January 1995

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF XENIA!
==============================
This is the first release of Xenia Mailer/Edit in 1995
Some of you may have seen earlier versions of (parts) of this package.
Or, maybe you have heard about The-Box? A little history....
The-Box was started in 1987 by Jac Kersing, who was writing a BBS
program called Pandora under CP/M (Pandora <> Box... get the idea? ;-)
After some time he moved both programs to the Atari ST, and later I
joined in for a version for MS-DOS. All freeware.
In addition to writing sections of the main mailer program, I wrote a
msg reader/editor, and later on a self-contained point-package based
on TB-Mailer + TB-Edit + some more, named TB-Point. That was shareware.
By the end of 1993 Jac was getting very busy with his other work, and
as there was increasing demand from users, we decided it would be best
to each keep a copy of the source and go our separate ways, so I would
be able to go on and develop the product further in a more professional/
commercial form of product/service that the users were asking for.
(Btw, we're still very good friends, don't worry)
Jac owns the name of the The-Box family of products, so it was up to
me to look for another name for my stuff....
Xenia is a word of Greek origin related to hospitality to strangers;
quite fitting for a comms package, eh?
(Xenia is also a girl's name, so we'll assume that Xenia is female ;-)
So here she is....
Xenia Mailer/Edit, Version 1.98, January 1995

SUPPORT
=======
There is an international (English-language) support echo tagged XENIA
that may or may not be backboned in your region; ask your local echomail
coordinator, or check with your local regsite.
In addition to this, some countries may have their own support echo
(local language); again, ask your local regsite for details.
Info about reporting problems and contacting regsites is listed below.
There is also an indirect method, available via FidoNet and Internet.
The author's FidoNet node and Internet site automatically redirects
messages for a number of special names to the appropriate person(s),
mailing list or echomail area. These special names are:
xenia-info Replies with general product information on Xenia,
and how get the latest version via FidoNet or FTP.
When coming from FidoNet, put some text in msgbody!
xenia-support Forwarded to the XENIA echomail conference/list
Your problems solved by experienced users.
xenia-bugs Forwarded to a restricted development area
Only use when necessary. Not everything is a bug!
xenia-sales Forwarded to all regsites via an echo/list
Sales inquiries & regsite applications
The following country-specific names may forward to a local support
echo, or be handled directly be a support site or experienced users.
More countries may be covered in the future.
xenia-NL Forwarded for support in The Netherlands
xenia-D Forwarded for support in Germany
xenia-USA Forwarded for support in the USA
xenia-LV Forwarded for support in Latvia
The addresses to which these msgs may be sent are:
FidoNet 2:283/512 (Modem upto V.34/V.FC)
2:283/550 (Modem upto V.32BIS/ZyXEL, and ISDN X.75)
2:283/551 (ISDN V.110 only)
Internet @bitbike.iaf.nl
So, you could send for instance a msg to xenia-support@bitbike.iaf.nl
Or a FidoNet netmail to username 'xenia-support' on 2:283/512
PLEASE use these channels, and avoid mailing or calling the author
directly. This way we can give the best possible support, and ensure
the smooth future development of the software. Thank you.
REGISTRATION
============
As already mentioned, Xenia is distributed in the form of a fully
functional evaluation package. But registration is REQUIRED if you want
to continue using the software beyond the trial period of one month.
With no crippling or time limits in the code, what's the incentive?
Well, I'm sure you'll be interested in future versions, and it's quite
possible that some editions will only be available to registered users.
Also, only registered users are eligible for joining the beta team.
And of course you'll want to do the right thing, and not be made fun
of by your fellow users... with such low registration fees? ;-)
The registration forms are located in the \XENIA\DOCS\ directory.
You can register by filling out the registration form for the regsite
most convenient for you, and follow the instructions therein. Each
regsite has different facilities and options for payment:
For instance the sites in the US and Germany can handle credit cards.
Users in Europe who have a giro account can best use the Dutch regsite
and transfer via EuroGiro, which is a simple method for international
money transfer with very low transfer costs. This applies to you if
you have a giro account in one of the following countries:
Austria (Oestereichische Postsparkasse) Belgium (Postcheque)
Britain (Girobank) Denmark (GiroBank) Finland (Postipankki)
France (La Poste) Luxembourg (PTT) Norway (Postgiro)
Spain (Caja Postal) Sweden (Postgirot) Switzerland (PTT)
Follow the instructions in the HOLLAND.REG registration form!
Please note that version 1.98 (Eval) does not contain any key scheme.
(ie. nothing to hack, either ;-)
Your registration will be confirmed by the regsite after receiving
both the registration form and full payment of the registration fee.
Registration keys will be sent out at a later date, but in any case
before any 'registered only' version is released.
Registration keys can only be sent via disk or electronic mail, not
in paper copy, so make sure you either add the funds for a disk on
your registration form, or specify a FidoNet/Internet e-mail address.
In general, e-mail is of course the preferred method.
If you have any questions concerning registration, please contact
your registration site via of the methods mentioned above.
Lentz Software Development does not handle any normal registrations
itself, only special arrangements with companies and organisations.
For all other registrations, please use the regsites.

Perhaps you are interested in becoming a regsite for your country?
Do think about this very carefully before you apply!
It's a serious (part-time) job that will require some time and effort.
If you have a business registration of some sort, that's a bonus.
For regsites in countries within the European Union, a company with
VAT registration is obligatory.
Still interested? contact us via: xenia-sales@bitbike.iaf.nl
Or FidoNet netmail to username 'xenia-support' on 2:283/512
PRICING
=======
This is the current pricing for the Xenia family of products.
Details of how to register can be found above, more in the individual
forms for each regsite. Please use the correct form for a site!

(NOTE: VAT/sales tax NOT included, please see the registration forms)
The base registration is for single line, one OS (either DOS or OS/2).
If you want to use Xenia on both DOS and OS/2, add that option.
There is an additional fee for a second line, and after that for each
extra line upto the maximum of 255.
If you also use Xenia Edit, add that option.
You can register additional options later (for instance more lines),
for the normal option fees, plus the 'change/upgrade charge'.
This because it does cost the regsites some money to process your
change and (later) mail you an updated key.
As you can see Xenia Edit may also be registered separately, if you
just want to use Xenia Edit and not Xenia Mailer.
The registration fee for the Xenia Point package (TB-Point) is also
listed. You can now register TB-Point at any of the Xenia regsites.
When registering the TB-Point package, you WILL receive a key code.
The special pricing at the Latvian registration site is only
available for private users in the Baltic and xUSSR countries!
INSTALLATION
============
The DOS and OS/2 versions of Xenia Mailer/Edit are distributed in
separate ZIP files, containing the same config archives and other
information, but a different archive with executables and batches.
The executables themselves also have different names (All OS/2 EXEs
have a 2 at the end) so you can install both versions in the same
directory structure without any conflicts.
When extracting any of the main or other archives with PKUNZIP,
you should see the -AV indication for each file, and at the end:
Authentic files Verified! # DSJ386
Arjen G. Lentz (LENTZ SOFTWARE-DEVELOPMENT)
Also, all files should have a timestamp of 31 Jan 1995, 08:00
If any of this information is missing, you may have modified or
corrupted archives. In this case, it is always best not to use/run
those files but get a fresh copy from one of the regsites.
There are some people with a weird sense of humor out there....
XM198DOS.ZIP / XM198OS2.ZIP
FILE_ID.DIZ "Description in ZIP" short info text file
SUPPORT.DOC This text, how to install Xenia
DOCS.ZIP Info and regforms unpack in \XENIA\DOCS\
CONFIGS.ZIP Main config unpack in \XENIA\
MODEMS.ZIP Modem config unpack in \XENIA\MODEMS\
BIN_DOS.ZIP DOS archive only unpack in \XENIA\BIN\
BIN_OS2.ZIP OS/2 archive only unpack in \XENIA\BIN\
DEV.ZIP Info for developers unpack in \XENIA\DEV\
The archives can be unpacked to other directories if you want, but in
that case you will have to adjust all paths in the config files....
You may also have to modify the drive letters, as the samples use C:
A simple search/replace though all .CFG files should do the trick.
After unpacking all the archives you can edit the config files in the
Xenia home directory (default \XENIA\).
The config is split into logical sections. Start with XENIA.CFG
Then modify your batch files (samples in \XENIA\BIN\).
Do read all the information carefully! Take your time.
After editing the configs and batches, you will need to change some
things in your config.sys/autoexec.bat. Details in XENIA.CFG
Don't forget to restart your system for these changes to take effect!
Xenia is only a mailer, it does NOT scan/pack your netmail directory
or create polls. You need a separate program to do that for you.
Any Binkley-style netmail packer or outbound manager will do.
For instance SquishMail (DOS and OS/2, and CAN handle .MSG msgbases).
Also, you will need to set your echomail and tickfile processors to
use the Binkley-style outbound scheme for file attaches etc.
This is most important.
If you're new to mailers (or switching from e.g. FrontDoor/InterMail)
you may need some help with all this. Don't be afraid to ask a fellow
sysop or post a message in the support conference!
Many have already done it and can easily provide you with the info
you need, perhaps even sample configurations and batchfiles.
It is not at all complicated, very simple in fact, it's just the
concept that some need to get used to.
Don't let it scare you, the end result is well worth it!
Have fun!
